The concept of the semiosphere appeared in the later work of Yuri Lotman. It replaced the understanding of culture as a bundle of secondary modelling systems. The concept of the semiosphere has been adopted in cultural studies, demonstrating its heuristic usefulness. This article suggests that the concept can be used in research on contemporary media. The concept of the semiosphere allows the mediosphere to be placed in the wider culture and connections with other areas to be discerned.
